"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy (the same guy who wrote "No Country for Old Men" ) is a chilling and enthralling read. To be sure.
If was the first subject that me and my now-boyfriend talked about when we were in that "awkward talking stage." We had both just finished it and had heared they were making a movie with Viggo Mortensen (sp?)---(that dude from "Lord of the Rings.")
Anyway, over a year later --- it finally came out! But only in limited release.
We saw it last weekend at this indie movie theater in Baltimore.
It was SO GOOD. I am usually not a fan of book-to-movie translations ... but this one was superb.
If you live somewhere where it's playing -- definitely go for it. I think it *may* be coming out it wide release soon, but, who knows.
It's not a particularly happy or up-lifting flick ... but even amidst the end of society, you find bits of humanity that remain.
I can't really talk about much without giving away crucial plot points .. but basically, there's been some kind of catastrophic nuclear event, and a young boy is born just as all this is going down.
After about a decade of enduring this harsh life, the father and son decide to head South (where it would be warmer.)
They follow the road.
Where does it lead? Read (or watch) to find out!!!

Well, It's officially the Christmas buying season. Again. I know I say this every year now, but (SERIOUSLY) didn't Christmas JUST happen?
I've gotten organized, bought some stuff ... but I still have a lot more to find.
And by find, I mean THINK OF! Why is this always such a problem for me?
You get the entire year to think of a great present for someone, and then you leave it up to the last 15 days to find it. RIDICULOUS.
Whatever. Gift cards all around.
But really, I've been trying to buy exclusively on Etsy and local shops in the downtown area here. I'm pretty lucky since there are a lot of super cute boutiques and specialty stores. I know a lot of places only have a Wal-Mart and a mall.
It just seems so much more special to get something that isn't mass-produced. Or, then again, maybe it is mass-produced, but it's just really marked up in the boutique store. Oh well. Buying local and supporting local business owners is almost like donating to charity. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside like you're doing something nice for your fellow human being. :)
Here is something that always gets me in a Christmasy mood. It's an old Disney cartoon about the night before Xmas and the toys come alive and all that. Classic!

I search for inspiration everywhere and in everything. I find a great deal of inspiration outside of reality. (In dreams, fairy tales and costuming, etc.)
But the absolute best is when fantasy and reality come together.
I love the thought that one can be at once in a normal life and suddenly slip into another space through a rabbit hole......or was it all a dream? And in the same token, one can put on a hair accessory or item of clothing and feel transformed.
The idea of logic is never certain...and it is in this idea that true creativity is found.
Anyway, the point of all this seemingly pointless rambling is that I'm planning to start on an Alice in Wonderland line!!
Alice in Wonderland (or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) has always been a favorite of mine. I started with the Disney cartoon version and eventually read the original Lewis Carroll. '
The new Tim Burton movie is coming out soon (which looks so amazing, by the way) and I LOVE the idea of creating a whole line of goodies based on one central idea!

I realized this afternoon that I've never really blogged about what I do (in my real life.)
I know you would imagine that I live in a happy little fairy cave where I whip up cute hair clips at my leisure. But, sadly, no.
I've got a day job (that's really a night job) where I work as a graphic designer at a newspaper! Sounds glamourous, but it's rough. Deadlines and breaking news.... you know.
Anyway, here's what I normally do (LINK) My usual daily duty is designing/laying out the front page. It's tough! Sometimes things don't happen until late and I have to start the dang thing all over again! craaa-zee.
But this I'm really proud of:
It's a special 12-page section I've been working on for about 2 weeks. It's about MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving.) This is the front of it.
The crash that started the whole organization (with the little girl) was in the town where I work. So they've got interviews with the mom and the driver. Compelling stuff! So... if you live in the area, pick one up tomorrow and support the dying newspaper industry!!

It's one of those times in my life where I start feeling overwhelmed, and therefore, I make lists. Actually, Etsy tends to slow down this time of year (people seem to not want hair crowns in the winter ??? crazy! I know!) But my life seems to jump into turbo speed around the holidays.
There is a mindset that the more I can cram into one day, the easier the rest of the days following will be. This never seems to pan out though because more stuff just piles up!
I was in the shower last night going over what I needed to do...trying to make up a song so that I would remember it all for once I'd dried off and found a pen.
It helps to see it all on paper I think .... and the best part of all .... getting to scratch each line off as I do it! :)
I will at least be able to scratch off "BLOG" from this list now. YES!
P.S. My sale's still going on!! Buy one, get one half off in the shop! Plus, I've added more goodies!! whichgoose

I thought this was sort of appropriate for Halloween ... since it's a bit on the freaky side!!! BUT, it's meant to represent a custom order because .......
The big day has finally come! I am once again open for custom order work!
I felt so bad that I had to actually turn people away. How sad :( But I really needed to take the time to work out a new system and be sure I was ready to devote my full attention to making special creations!
I got my inventory pretty beefed up a bit so I won't have to worry about that too too much....
So, anyway, here is the new deal for custom work (as seen in my shop policies section on Etsy:
*****CUSTOM ORDERS***** I accept custom orders on a limited basis (only if my general shop announcement says so. I do this because I like to spend a lot of time and extra energy into making these creations just perfect!
If you would like to work on a piece with me, I need to know exactly what you're looking for...... what materials you like, don't like .... what style or pieces you like from my sold items .... really, any info you think would help!
I do charge extra for custom work as follows:
COMBS --- $40 each
WIRE CROWNS/TIARAS---$50 each
NATURAL VINE CROWNS --- $75 each
Payment is due when the piece is complete and listed in the shop. I am happy to do a COUPLE edits to get it just so.
Also, there is an added time element for turnaround ... usually about 2 weeks.
